Sanan Sjugirov Joins the Superfinal Leaders

Guseva, Gunina, and Goltseva are ahead in the women's event.

Round six of the Russian Championships Superfinals among men and women is over in the city of Cheboksary, to be followed by a rest day.

In the open tournament, Sanan Sjugirov defeated Maksim Chigaev as White to become one of the tournament leaders. The grandmaster said that his opponent had not been precise in the opening, but after that he himself would not perform precisely either.

“Probably, it was an approximately equal and complicated position. I managed to outplay him in a complex struggle that followed, but I still don’t quite understand where Maksim had gone wrong, and it seems that neither does he realise it in full himself yet. It was a very complex game," concluded Sjugirov.

Nesterov vs. Najer was a very sharp game not immune to errors, in which advantage used to change hands, but in the end the balance of forces remained undisturbed.

Iljiushenok – Matlakov, Esipenko – Dubov, Artemiev – Murzin, and Tomashevsky – Rakhmanov also ended in a draw.

Standings after Round 6:

Round 7 pairings (18 September):

Olga Girya went down to Ekaterina Goltseva in the women's section. The player of Nizhny Novgorod said after the game that she had failed to get an advantage as White, and then Black started exerting some pressure both in terms of time and position. Nevertheless, the game outcome in an approximately equal position was sealed by a blunder, upon which Black's position became hopeless.

In the longest game of the round, Valentina Gunina saved as White a nearly hopeless position against Yana Zhapova, upon which Black, facing a severe time pressure, could not hold the rook and knight vs. rook and three pawns ending.

Yakimova – Galliamova, Pogonina – Charochkina, Garifullina – Ovod, and Guseva – Bivol were drawn.
