Vachier-Lagrave Starts Grand Prix Event With Two Wins

Adams and Mamedyarov are half a point behind him.

In Sharjah, UAE, the second round of the first leg of FIDE Grand Prix was played. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, playing Black, defeated Richard Rapport (Hungary) and became the only player to win both starting games. Michael Adams (England) and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan) both have 1.5 points. Mamedyarov defeated the Russian Evgeny Tomashevsky in the second round. 

Other four Russians played with each other, and their games ended peacefully: Jakovenko-Grischuk and Nepomniachtchi-Riazantsev. 



Current standings: Vachier-Lagrave – 2, Adams, Mamedyarov – 1.5, Aronian, Vallejo, Grischuk, Ding Liren, Nakamura, Nepomniachtchi, Rapport, Riazansev, Hammer, Hou Yifan, Eljanov, Jakovenko – 1, Li Chao, Tomashevsky – 0.5, Salem – 0. 

In the third round Grischuk has White against Aronian, Nepomniachtchi plays Black against Vallejo, Jakovenko has Black against Hou Yifan, Riazantsev plays White against Li Chao, and Tomashevsky has White against Salem.
