Russian Team Takes Gold at Blitz Tournament at BRICS Games

The chess competition in Kazan is over.


Friday, June 21, the final chess competition of the BRICS Games in Kazan took place, which was the team blitz tournament. Representatives of 16 countries took part in it.
 
The Russian team consisting of Vladislav Artemiev, Andrey Esipenko, Kateryna Lagno, and Valentina Gunina took gold with 21 match points out of 22 under their belts. As in rapid, the Russians only drew China and won all other matches.
 
The Chinese team with Xu Xiangyu, Bai Jinshi, Guo Qi and Song Yuxin finished second, one match point behind the Russians.
 
The bronze medal, as in the rapid tournament, was won by Team Uzbekistan. Abdimalik Abdisalimov, Saidakbar Saydaliev, Umida Omonova, and Marjona Malikova have scored 18 points.
 
At the closing ceremony the winners and prize-takers were awarded by Ilsur Khadiullin, Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Tatarstan, and Alexander Tkachev, Executive Director of the Chess Federation of Russia.
 
Thus, the chess programme of the BRICS Games saw the Russians take four gold medals, one silver and one bronze in individual events, as well as two gold medals in the team ones. We congratulate the Russian chess players and team coaches on their great success!
