Naum Rashkovsky Celebrates His Birthday

The outstanding player and trainer turns 70.

On April 18, grandmaster and two-time RSFSR champion Naum Rashkovsky celebrates his 70th birthday.

In late 60s – early 70s he was among a group of the most promising young masters, which also included Gennady Kuzmin, Vitaly Tseshkovsky, Karen Grigoryan, and some other names. They had a difficult time battling the previous great generation, and they have never managed to qualify for the candidates matches, however, they celebrated a number of big victories.

Naum Rashkovsky's debut in USSR championships was in 1972 in Baku, where he drew attention of experts with his highly original and non-standard play. Even the winner of the championship, Mikhail Tal, praised his games. Rashkovsky's best result in USSR championships was the 8th place in 1986.

Among his competitive achievements are two victories in RSFSR championships in 1974 and 1976, and sharing the 1st-2nd places of the 1982 Moscow Open Championship with David Bronstein. The first place in the international tournament in Sochi, 1979, made Rashkovsky an international grandmaster. He also played successfully in Lvov, 1981, Open Championship of Hungary, 1987, and some other events.

He was not only a strong practical player, but also a formidable coach, who worked with Nona Gaprindashvili, Vitaly Tseshkovsky, national teams of Kazakhstan and national team of Russia, which he brought to victories at the Olympiad and European Championship in 2001-2003.

Later Naum Nikolaevich turned to club movement, and founded many strong clubs in Ekaterinburg – Agat, MaxVen, Ural, and Malachite, which collected numerous titles on Russian and international scene. In 2008 he became a rector of Ural Chess Academy.
