Game nine of the Carlsen - Nepomniachtchi World Championship match finished on Tuesday, December 7, at the World Expo 2020 in Dubai. The young Indian talent Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa made the symbolic first move for the Russian grandmaster.

Ian Nepomniachtchi changed his opening serve in favor of 1.с4. The opponents opted for a rare line of the English opening, in which White managed to gain a slight spatial advantage. Magnus Carlsen resorted to his favorite trick of temporarily sacrificing a pawn for the initiative in search of equalising. Unfortunately, White committed a blunder in a quite promising position; as a result, his bishop walked into a trap. Carlsen scored yet another victory on move 39.

The match score has become 6-3 in the world champion’s favor. Game ten is scheduled on Wednesday, December 8, with Magnus Carlsen playing the white pieces.
