Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge: Quarterfinals Begin
Nakamura won against Aronian, Yu Yangyi opened the score against Ding Liren.
The quarterfinals of the Lindores Abbey Rapid Challenge, the second event of the Magnus Carlsen Chess Tour, started on Chess24.com. In the knockout stage, the qualifiers play maximum 3 matches (one per day); the one who wins 2 matches advances to the next round. Each match consists of 4 rapid games. In case of a 2-2 tie, an Armageddon game is played.
The first round of the Nakamura vs. Aronian and Yu Yangyi vs. Ding Liren matches was played on May 23.
Levon Aronian won the first game with White, then two draws followed. Hikaru Nakamura managed to strike back in the fourth encounter to equalise the score. Finally, the American won the "sudden death" game with the black pieces.
The Chinese derby saw four draws in the regular part. In the Armageddon, Ding Liren lost on time in a won position, and Yu Yangyi took the lead in the match.
The Carlsen - So and Dubov - Karjakin matches will start on May 24.
