FIDE Candidates Tournaments Open in Toronto

The FIDE Candidates and the FIDE Women's Candidates Tournaments were officially opened in Toronto, Canada, on 3 April. 

Round 1 pairings (Open):

Fabiano Caruana - Hikaru Nakamura
Nijat Abasov - Ian Nepomniachtchi
Alireza Firouzja - Praggnanandhaa R
Gukesh D - Vidit Santosh Gujrathi

The time control for each game is 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 41.

Round 1 pairings (Women):

Aleksandra Goryachkina - Kateryna Lagno
Anna Muzychuk - Nurgyul Salimova
Lei Tingjie - Tan Zhongyi
Vaishali Rameshbabu - Humpy Koneru

The time control for each game is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 1.

The match days:

4-7, 9-11, 13-15, 17-18, and 20-21 April. If the first place is shared, a tiebreak match is to take place on 22 April.

The games start at 2:30 PM local time (9:30 PM Moscow time).

The total prize fund for the event is 750,000 euros, with 500,000 for the Open and 250,000 for the Women’s Candidates.

The winner of the Open section will challenge the reigning World Champion, Ding Liren, while the winner of the Women’s tournament will take on the Women’s World Champion Ju Wenjun.
