The World Junior Championships started in New Delhi. After the official opening ceremony, FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich made the first symbolic move in the M. Amin Tabatabaei - Ghosh Aronyak game.
It didn't go without unexpected results in the first round. For example, rating favourites scored only 50% on the top five boards: M. Amin Tabatabaei (Iran), Murali Karthikeyan and Aravindh Chitambaram (both from India) made draws with lower rated opponents, while Carlos Daniel Albornoz Cabrera from Cuba suffered a loss.
The majority of Russian players won their games.
