Some favorites suffered losses on the very first day.

The biggest upset of the starting day of the KO championship in Tehran, Iran, was Nana Dzagnidze's loss to Khaled Mona. The Georgian was an overwhelming rating favorite and played White, but it was the Egyptian who celebrated a win.

Russia is represented by 11 players, and many of them did not start well. Only Kosteniuk and Gunina began the tournament with victories. Pogonina, Goryachkina, Savina, and Kashlinskaya made draws, while Charochkina, Bodnaruk, Kovalevskaya, and Nechaeva started with losses. Olga Girya advanced to the second round uncontested, because her first round opponent, Christina Foisor, deceased three weeks before the start.
