Wei Yi Wins Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2024

He defeated Abdusattorov and Gukesh on tie-break.

The 86th edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2024 has finished in Wijk aan Zee. In the final 13th round of the Masters tournament, Dommaraju Gukesh defeated Parham Maghsoodloo, Wei Yi bested Santosh Vidit, Nodirbek Abdusattorov outplayed Alexander Donchenko, While Anish Giri crushed Max Warmerdam. The games Ding Liren - Ju Wenjun, Praggnanandhaa - Firouzja, and Nepomniachtchi - Van Foreest were drawn.  

 

 
Anish Giri, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Dommaraju Gukesh, and Wei Yi shared 1st place with 8.5 points scored by each. According to the Regulations, they determined the winner on tie-break, which was played as a knock-put blitz (3+2) tournament. 

Wei Yi won against Abdusattorov in a semifinal match 1.5-0.5. Anish Giri and Gukesh exchanged blows in a blitz portion and continued struggle in "sudden death" games with a time control of 2 minutes 30 seconds for White and 3 minutes for Black with a 2-second increment from move 1 for both players, until one player wins. Gukesh was the first one to win and advanced to the final.

The first encounter of the final match between Gukesh and Wei Yi ended in a draw. The second game was won by Wei Yi, who became the tournament winner.

10-13. Ju Wenjun, Alexander Donchenko, Jorden Van Foreest, Parham Maghsoodloo - 4.5
14. Max Warmerdam - 4.

The Challengers tournament was won by the Indian grandmaster Leon Luke Mendonca.
