Team India Wins Belaya Ladya Final With One Round to Go

Decisive games are ahead.


On June 7th, the penultimate round 8 of the 49th final tournament of the open all-Russian scholastic chess team event Belaya Ladya (also known as White Rook) was played in Dagomys (Sochi).  

Having defeated the players from Buryatia 3.5-0.5 and scored 30 points, the Indian schoolchildren won the tournament with one round to spare thus repeating the team's success of the previous year. Sverdlovsk Oblast is trailing by 7 points. Moscow and Kyrgyzstan have scored 20.5 points each.

This year, 100 teams from 78 regions of Russia and also Armenia, Belarus, Czech Republic, England, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kenia, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Moldavia, Mongolia, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden, and Turkmenistan are taking part in the final event. 

A team from orphanages and boarding schools is participating in the final competition for the fourth year in a row. Children from the Boarding School №26 from Ryazan Oblast, who had won the Ascension tournament (Sochi, 2018), joined other participants in the Belaya Ladya final. 

Traditionally, a vast cultural and entertaining program is accompanying the event. Master classes, lectures, games analysis, mind games, contests, and sport events are organized. A two-time Russian champion, a three-time Olympic champion Alexander Morozevich and a three-time world champion in chess composition Oleg Pervakov will work with children on the final days of the competition.
