World Strongest Grandmasters to Arrive in Shamkir

The 5th Vugar Gashimov Memorial to be held on April 18-28.

The 5th edition of the super tournament in memory of the prominent Azerbaijani grandmaster, European champion as a member of the national chess team Vugar Gashimov (1986-2014) will take place in Shamkir. The event is supported by the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), the Ministry of the Youth and Sports of the Azerbaijan Republic, and the Azerbaijan Chess Federation in partnership with the Synergy Group company. 

The World champion Magnus Carlsen (2843, Norway), Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (2814, Azerbaijan), Ding Liren (2778, China), Sergey Karjakin (2778, Russia), Anish Giri (2777, Netherlands), Veselin Topalov (2749, Bulgaria), Teimour Radjabov (2748, Azerbaijan), David Navara (2745, Czech Republic), Radoslaw Wojtaszek (2744, Poland), who replaced the 14th World champion Vladimir Kramnik, and Rauf Mamedov (2704, Azerbaijan) with play 9 rounds according to the all-play-all system. 

The venue is Heydar Aliyev Centre. The Opening Ceremony will be held on April 18. 

The match days: April 19-23 and 25-28. The rest day is April 24. The games will start at 2 p.m., the last round will begin at 1 p.m. (Moscow time).  

Magnus Calrsen won two first super tournaments in Shamkir, while Shakhriyar Mamedyarov took first places in 2016 and 2017.
