Russian Teams Win The World Seniors Championships

Our congratulations!

On May 2, the World Seniors Championships finished in Greece. There were two tournaments in 50+ and 65+ age groups. 

The team from St. Petersburg won all nine matches in the 50+ championship and secured the title. The lineup of the champions: former World Champion Alexander Khalifman, Sergey Ivanov, Sergey Ionov, and Evgeny Solozhenkin. 

Armenia finished second with 15 points, England finished third with 14 points. 

Russian women's team finished on sixth place with 10 points. 

Final standings

Another Russian team won all matches in the 65+ category and grabbed another title. The lineup: Evgeny Sveshnikov, Evgeny Vasiukov, Yury Balashov, Vladimir Zhelnin, and Nikolay Pushkov.

France finished second with 15 points, Sweden was third with 12 points.

Alexander Khalifman took third place on the first board with 6 out of 9. Sergey Ivanov (8.5/9), Sergey Ionov (6.5/9), and Evgeny Solozhenkin (8.5/9) all took first places on their boards. 

Evgeny Sveshnikov finished first on the first board of the 65+ championship with 6/7. Yury Balashov (6.5/7), Vladimir Zhelnin (7/8), and Nikolay Pushkov (6/7) also won gold medals on their boards.
