Russian Men’s Team Takes Second Place at European Championship

Russian women’s team wins the final match in the rank of champion.

In the ultimate round 9 of the European Team Championship the Russian men’s team defeated Germany 3-1 (Ian Nepomniachtchi and Nikita Vitiugov won, Alexander Grischuk and Daniil Dubov drew their games) to get 14 match points and catch up with Azerbaijan. However, the Azerbaijani chess players became the European champions due to their superior tie-break. Russia won silver medals, while Ukraine is third with 13 match points.   

Final standings

The Russian women’s team, which had secured the first place with one round to go, won the match against Armenia 3.5-0.5 (Alexandra Kosteniuk, Valentina Gunina, and Aleksandra Goryachkina won their games, Olga Girya made a draw). Our chess players gained 17 match points out of 18 having made only one draw in nine matches! 

Georgia is second (14 points), while Ukraine is third (13 points).

Head Coach of the Russia men's national chess team Andrey Filatov: «We have always believed in our «golden» girls. They managed to show a fine result and maintain the title in a very tough contest with strong rivals. I congratulate all Russian chess lovers on this wonderful victory. As for the men’s team, we played with an experimental composition of players, and sharing the first place is a success. We wanted to keep the title and were close to do it. But nowadays were are in search of an ideal quintet to win the Olympic gold in 2018».
