Russian men's team wins against Hungary

After five rounds Russia is at the joint 6th place.

In the 5th round of the World Team Championship in Tsaghkadzor, Armenia, Russian team finally scored a win, crushing Hungary 3.5-0.5. The positions during the match didn't look very promising, so the final result was rather surprising.

Evgeny Tomashevsky managed to turn the tables and convert a suspicious but sharp position to a win. Nikita Vitiugov had a big advantage during the entire game and duly converted it. Sergey Karjakin managed to outplay his opponent late in the game, despite not having any advantage after the opening. Finally, Alexander Grischuk accurately defended as Black against Peter Leko on the first board, thus ceding the only half a point in the match.

Other four matches ended with the same score – 2.5-1.5. Ukraine defeated India, China beat Egypt, USA lost to Armenia, and Cuba lost to Israel.

Standings after 5 rounds:

1. Ukraine – 8 (13 board points), 2. China – 8 (12.5), 3. Israel – 7 (12), 4. Cuba – 7 (11.5), 5. India – 5 (9.5), 6. Russia – 4 (10.5), 7-8. Armenia and Hungary – both 4 (8.5), 9. USA – 2 (8.5), 10. Egypt – 1 (5.5).
