Return Games of FIDE World Cup Round 5 Finished in Baku

Russian players to sort things out on tiebreaks.


The return games of Round 5 of the FIDE World Cup – the round-of-16 in the Open tournament and еру quarterfinals in the Women's event –finished in the city of Baku. 

In the Open section, Magnus Carlsen scored his second victory over Vasyl Ivanchuk to become the first quarterfinalist of the World Cup. Dommaraju Gukesh defeated Wang Hao (1.5-0.5) to face the Norwegian in Round 6.

Ian Nepomniachtchi and Santosh Vidit have drawn again. Therefore, they will reveal the winner over a tie-break of August 14. The Russian player is Black in game one. 

Nijat Abasov defeated Saleh Salem with an overall score of 2-0. In the quarterfinal, the Azeri player is to face the winner of Nepomniachtchi vs. Vidit.

Leinier Dominguez drew Alexey Sarana to take the match with a score of 1.5-0.5. In the quarterfinals, the American GM is to face his compatriot Fabiano Caruana. The latter has knocked the reigning World Cup winner Jan-Krzysztof Duda out of the race. 

Nils Grandelius has failed to come back against Arjun Erigaisi; the duel has ended with an overall score of 1.5-0.5 in favour of the Indian grandmaster. In game two, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa outplayed Ferenc Berkes to become his national teammate's next opponent.

In the Women's section, three of the four matches are to be decided on tie-break. Tan Zhongyi outperformed Bella Khotenashvili with a score of 1.5-0.5. 

Polina Shuvalova defeated Nurgyul Salimova in a tense struggle to level the match score. Shuvalova is Black in their first rapid game.

Aleksandra Goryachkina and Dronavalli Harika have drawn the classical part of their match and will determine a stronger player on tie-break. The Russian player is Black in their first game. 

Anna Muzychuk vs. Elisabeth Paehtz have drawn both their games as well. The chess player of Ukraine is White in game one.
