Peter Svidler Is An Eightfold Russian Champion!

On December 14, the final 11th round of the Russian Championships Superfinals among men and women was played in the State Museum of Political History of Russia in Saint Petersburg.  

In the open tournament, Nikita Vitiugov defeated Sergey Volkov, Peter Svidler putplayed Vladimir Malakhov, while Daniil Dubov bested Ernesto Inarkiev. The games Romanov - Fedoseev, Riazantsev - Matlakov, and Tomashevsky - Sjugirov were drawn.

Peter Svidler and Nikita Vitiugov scored 7 points out of 11 and had to play a tie-break for the 1st place according to the Regulations. Peter Svidler won both rapid games to become an eightfold champion of Russia. 

Daniil Dubov and Vladimir Fedoseev shared 3-4 places, but Dubov won the bronze medal thanks to his superior tie-break.

In the women’s section, Alina Kashlinskaya defeated Alisa Galliamova. The games Gritsayeva - Pogonina, Nechaeva - Gunina, Kovalevskaya - Bodnaruk, Ovod - Girya, and Shuvalova - Goryachkina ended in a draw. 

Aleksandra Goryachkina and Natalija Pogonina shared the 1st place with 7 points and had to determine the winner in an additional match. Aleksandra Goryachkina won both games to became the Russian women’s champion. She has repeated her success of the year of 2015. 

Alina Kashlinskaya and Olga Girya shared 3-4 places with 6.5 points, but Kashlinskaya became a bronze medallist due to her superior tie-break.

Executive Director of the Russian Chess Federation Mark Glukhovsky and Director General of the State Museum of Political History of Russia Evgeny Artemov gave speeches at the Closing Ceremony. 

The winners were granted with certificates for a four-wheel-drive crossovers Renault Kaptur - a special prize from Renault Russia Company. A festive presentation and handing of the cars to their new owners will be held in January 2018.

Evgeny Artemov also rewarded the winners with annual tickets to any Museum’s exhibitions.
