The penultimate eighth round of the 2023 Superbet Chess Classic Romania, the first stage of the Grand Chess Tour, was played in Bucharest on 14 May. Jan-Krzysztof Duda defeated one of the tournament's leader Alireza Firouzja as White: the Polish grandmaster converted an extra pawn in the endgame with rooks and minor pieces. The games Caruana - Giri, Nepomniachtchi - So, Vachier-Lagrave - Deac, and Ding - Rapport were drawn.
