Dramatic Second Game of World Cup Final Ends in a Draw

The score is 1-1.

On September 24, the second game of the World Cup final match between Levon Aronian (Armenia) and Ding Liren (China) was played in Tbilisi. The Chinese player had white pieces.

The encounter turned out to be very dramatic. The grandmasters played the Catalan Opening, where Black organized a pawn attack on the queenside, but after many exchanges the position simplified a lot. However, Ding Liren was a bit imprecise to allow his opponent to obtain a pass a-pawn, and thus the Chinese player was faced with serious difficulties. White was by a hair’s breadth of losing, but being in a harsh time trouble Levon Aronian lost the track of the play, and Black’s advantage slipped through his fingers. The players agreed to a draw on move 75.

The score is 1-1.

Levon Aronian will play with white pieces in the 3rd game.
