Alexander Grischuk and Andrey Esipenko in Lead of Aeroflot Open

Six rounds are played in Moscow.


Tuesday, March 5, Rounds 5 and 6 of the traditional international chess festival "Aeroflot Open 2024" were played at The Carlton Hotel, Moscow.  

At the beginning of the round, Alexander Tkachev, Executive Director of the Chess Federation of Russia, presented Ulyana Dudkina, the silver medallist of the Asian U14 Girls Championship, with a gift from the Chess Federation of Russia – a modern laptop.  

Alexey Ladykov, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Chuvash Republic, Plenipotentiary Envoy of the Chuvash Republic to the President of the Russian Federation, was a guest of this round.

Going into day four, the rating favourites Alexander Grischuk and Andrey Esipenko have taken the lead with 5 out of 6 points. Denis Khismatullin, Ilia Iljiushenok, Pavel Ponkratov, Aleksey Grebnev, Sergey Drygalov, Aleksandr Shimanov (all from Russia), M. Amin Tabatabaei (Iran) and Haik Martirosyan (Armenia) are half a point behind the leaders.  

The Russian Youth Cup goes into Round 7 of 9 as well.

U15, open:

1-2. B. Golovchenko (St. Petersburg), M. Ivannikov (Moscow) – 5.5 points each; 3-4. L. Artemenko (Saratov Oblast), D. Dambaev (Moscow) – 5 points apiece. 

U15, girls:

1. U. Dudkina (St. Petersburg) – 6 points; 2. D. Khafizova (Moscow) – 5 points. There are 8 participants sharing 4 points apiece. 

U13, open:

1-2. Е. Knyazkov (Moscow), M. Belousov (Chelyabinsk Oblast) – with 5.5 points.  Trailing half a point behind are 6 players.

U13, girls:

1. A. Yunker – 6; 2-3. T. Mozolevskaya, I. Masaeva (all of Moscow) – with 5 points.

The Aeroflot Open International Chess Tournament is organised by the Chess Federation of Russia and the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation with the support of Aeroflot.
