First Round of FIDE Grand Prix Leg Finishes in Jerusalem

All Russian players advanced to quarterfinals.


The tiebreak of Round 1 of the FIDE Grand Prix Series final leg organized by World Chess was played in Jerusalem on December 13. 

Four matches finished in rapid: Ian Nepomniachtchi bested Boris Gelfand (3-1), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave defeated Veselin Topalov (3-1), Dmitry Andreikin eliminated Radoslaw Wojtaszek (2.5-1.5), while Wei Yi won against Anish Giri (2.5-1.5).

Dmitry Jakovenko beat Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (3.5-2.5) in the "10+10" phase. Having lost the first rapid game, the Russian managed to come back and eventually won the match. 

Wang Hao eliminated Wang Hao having won the last blitz game and the whole match 4.5-3.5.

All draws were played in the Karjakin vs. Harikrishna encounter so the rivals made it to the Armageddon, where the Indian grandmaster had the white pieces. The "sudden death" also ended in a draw, so the Sergey Karjakin qualified for the next round.
