First Games of Tata Steel Chess Tournament Played in Wijk aan Zee

The Russians started with draws in the Masters event.

On the 15th of January, the first games of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament were played in Wijk aan Zee. Three games finished decisively in the Masters event, and all of them were won by those who had the white pieces.

Jan-Krzysztof Duda defeated Richard Rapport, Jorden Van Foreest beat Nils Grandelius, while Santos Vidit outplayed Sam Shankland. The games Caruana - Karjakin, Dubov - Mamedyarov, Esipenko - Carlsen, and Giri - Praggnanandhaa were drawn.

4-11. Magnus Carlsen, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Sergey Karjakin, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, Daniil Dubov, Andrey Esipenko - 0.5
12-14. Richard Rapport, Sam Shankland, Nils Grandelius - 0.

Round 2 pairings:

Shankland - Grandelius, Rapport - Van Foreest, Praggnanandhaa - Duda, Carlsen - Giri, Mamedyarov - Esipenko, Karjakin - Dubov, and Vidit - Caruana.
In the Challengers event, Volodar Murzin won against Daniel Dardha (Belgium), whilst Polina Shuvalova bested Zhu Jiner (China). The Russian players will face each other in Round 2.
