Tata Steel Chess Tournament Begins in Wijk aan Zee

Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren will face each other again.


The first super tournament of the year, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2024, starts in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands. In 2024, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament celebrates its 86th year.

The main event, Masters, is a 13-round all-play-all tournament featuring the World Champion Ding Liren (2780), Ian Nepomniachtchi (2769), Alireza Firouzja (2759), Anish Giri (2749), R Praggnanandhaa  (2743), Vidit Santosh Gujrathi (2742), Wei Yi (2740), Parham Maghsoodloo (2740), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (2727), Gukesh D (2725), Jorden Van Foreest (2682), Alexander Donchenko (2643), Max Warmerdam (2625), and the Women's World Champion Ju Wenjun (2549).

The match days are 13-16, 18-21, 23-24, and 26-28 January. 

The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes for the rest of the game, with a 30-second increment per move from move one.
