Rauf Mamedov Wins European Blitz Championship

Russians Boris Savchenko and Alexander Riazantsev took silver and bronze.

The European blitz championship took place on December 18 in Minsk. The event was attended by more than 600 players. 
 
Grandmaster Rauf Mamedov (Azerbaijan) scored 18 points in 22 games and became a new European blitz champion. Only an inferior tie-break score kept Boris Savchenko at the second place. Alexander Riazantsev and Dmitry Bocharov (all from Russia) tied for the third place, and Riazantsev received the bronze medal on tie-break. 

Valentina Gunina showed the best result among women – 15.5. Yury Balashov was best among seniors – 14.5 points. 


The European rapid championship will be played on December 19-20. More than 800 players will compete for the title. The highest rated player is Ernesto Inarkiev (Russia).
