Vladimir Ponfilenok Becomes Russian Senior Champion

The Russian Senior Championships have finished in the Olympic Reserve Chess and Checkers Sports School in Saint Petersburg.

Having scored 6.5 points out of 9, Vladimir Ponfilenok became a new Russian champion. GM Yuri Balashov finished in second place with 6 points. GM Sergey Ionov, IM Alexandr Provotorov, and GM Valery Loginov shared the 3rd-6th places with 5.5 points scored; thanks to his superior tie-break, Ionov won bronze. 

WGMs Galina Strutinskaia, Tatiana Bogumil, Irina Mikhaylova, IM Nina Sirotkina, and Tatiana Ivanova got 6 points each to split the 1st-5th places in the women's tournament. Tiebreakers put them in the above-mentioned order. 

The next event in Saint Petersburg will be the Russian Senior Rapid Championships, which will be held at the same place on 3-4 October. The participants will play 10 rounds. 

The Russian Senior Championships are organised by the Physical Culture and Sports Committee of St. Petersburg, the Chess Federation of Russia and the Sports Chess Federation of St. Petersburg.
