Viswanathan Anand and Ju Wenjun Win World Rapid Championships

The King Salman World Rapid Championships among men and women finished in Riyadh. In the open tournament, Viswanathan Anand (India), Vladimir Fedoseev and Ian Nepomniachtchi (both from Russia) scored 10.5 points out of 15. According to the Regulations, two players with superior tiebreakers had to play an additional match. 

Vishy Anand and Vladimir Fedoseev fought for the gold in a play-off, while Ian Nepomniachtchi became bronze medalist. Having defeated the Russian grandmaster in blitz 1.5-0.5, Viswanathan Anand won the World Rapid Championship. 

Final standings

Ju Wenjun is a new Rapid Women’s Champion with 11.5 points out of 15. Lei Tingjie (both from China) is half a point behind. Elisabeth Paehtz (Germany) won the bronze medal with 10.5 points.

Bibisara Assaubayeva, Aleksandra Goryachkina, and Polina Shuvalova showed the best results among the Russian chess players (9.5 points). 

Final standings

The King Salman World Blitz Championships among men and women start on December 29. 11 rounds will be played on the first day.
