Aleksandra Goryachkina Wins Game 5 of Women's World Championship Match Against Ju Wenjun

The score is 2.5-2.5.

The FIDE Women's World Championship Match between Ju Wenjun (China) and Aleksandra Goryachkina (Russia) resumed in Shanghai with the fifth game on January 11.

Ernst Yurkin, Deputy Consul General of the Russian Federation in Shanghai, and Zhu Chen, former World Champion and FIDE Treasurer, made first symbolic moves in the game.

Having the white pieces, the Russian player opted for the English Opening, which is an unusual choice for her. The World Champion chose one of the most principal lines with a pawn sacrifice on b7. Black exchanged queens rather early but it turned out to be in White's interest. Uncastled black king fearlessly marched to the centre but faced several threats. Quite soon, the Chinese player gave up the exchange for a pawn.

Aleksandra Goryachkina managed to convert her material advantage in the endgame and celebrated victory on the 51st move thus equalizing the score.

The score is 2.5-2.5.

The sixth game, in which Ju Wenjun will have the white pieces, will be played on January 12.
