Saint Petersburg to Host Russian Senior Chess Championships

St. Petersburg is to hold the Russian Seniors Chess Championships from 23 September to 6 October. The program includes competitions in classical, rapid and blitz chess.

The Olympic Reserve Chess and Checkers Sports School on Bolshaya Konyushennaya Street, historically known as the Mikhail Chigorin Club, will be the venue of the event.  

Among others, such well-known chess players as Sergey Arkhipov, Yuri Balashov, Evgeni Dragomarezkij, Sergey Ivanov, Sergey Ionov, Nukhim Rashkovsky, Sergey Smagin, Yuri Yakovich, Tatiana Bogumil, Tatiana Grabuzova, Ludmila Zaitseva, Tatiana Stepovaia, Galina Strutinskaia, Tatiana Shumiakina, and others are expected to take part in the competition.

The classical championship is held in 9 rounds according to the Swiss system, while the rapid determines its champions based on the outcome of 10 rounds, and the blitz – of 11 rounds.

The total prize pool of all tournaments is 2 million rubles.

The Russian Senior Championships are organised by the Physical Culture and Sports Committee of St. Petersburg, the Chess Federation of Russia and the Sports Chess Federation of St. Petersburg.

The general sponsor of the Championship is Gazprom. The CFR general partner is PhosAgro. The tournament's partner is Aeroflot.
