Magnus Carlsen and Nana Dzagnidze Become World Blitz Champions
Sergey Karjakin and Valentina Gunina win silver medals.
The King Salman World Blitz Championships among men and women finished in Riyadh on December 30.
Magnus Carlsen had secured his victory in the men’s tournament with one round to spare. Eventually, the Norwegian scored 16 points out of 21 to win the World Blitz Champion’s title. 2-3 places were shared by Sergey Karjakin (Russia) and Viswanathan Anand (India) with 14.5 points. Thanks to his superior tie-break, the Russian player became silver medalist.
Final standings
Nana Dzagnidze (Georgia) won the women’s Championship - 16.5/21. Valentina Gunina (Russia) is half a point behind. Ju Wenjun (China, 3rd place) and Kateryna Lagno (Russia, 4th place) scored 14 points.
