Higher League Round 1 Results

The first round games of Russian Higher Leagues are played in Kaliningrad.


Men's tournament

18 players won their first round games, and one received a win by default. The second seed player, grandmaster Maxim Matlakov, suffered a setback, losing to the Siberian GM Aleksei Pridorozhni, who is much better known for his brilliant blitz skills. Most of other favorites won their starting games, including the ex-World Champion Alexander Khalifman, European Champion Evgeniy Najer and Russian Blitz Champion Dmitry Bocharov.

Women's tournament

Only two games out of 19 ended in draws. IM Daria Charochkina surprisingly lose to one of the talented Baraeva sisters. IM Tatjana Vasilevich, playing White, was defeated by a candidate master Evgeniya Sukhareva. Other favorites generally had few problems getting through the first round with a win.
