Higher League of Russian Senior Championships Opened in St. Petersburg

Round one games will be played on 24 September.

 
The Olympic Reserve Chess and Checkers Sports School held the official ceremony for opening of the Russian Senior Chess Championships, scheduled in Saint Petersburg from 23 September to 6 October.
 
Deputy Chairman of the St. Petersburg Committee for Physical Culture and Sports Elena Pavlova and President of the Sports Chess Federation of St. Petersburg, General Director of the Gazprom Transgaz St. Petersburg LLC Georgy Fokin delivered welcome speeches to the participants and guests. The chess players were also greeted by the Tournament Director, Chairman of the Veterans' Commission of the Chess Federation of Russia Galina Dvorkovich and Executive Director of the Sports Chess Federation of St. Petersburg Vladimir Bykov.
 
In store for tournament guests and participants after the official part of the ceremony was a classical music concert by a quartet of soloists from the leading musical bands of St. Petersburg. 
 
The Russian Senior Chess Championship begins with a classical chess tournament. The competition is played to 9 rounds of the Swiss system. The round one begins on 24 September at 3 PM.
 
The tournament venue is the Olympic Reserve Chess and Checkers Sports School, historically known as Chigorin Chess Club.

The Russian Senior Championships are organised by the Physical Culture and Sports Committee of St. Petersburg, the Chess Federation of Russia and the Sports Chess Federation of St. Petersburg.

The general sponsor of the championship is Gazprom. The CFR general partner is PhosAgro. The tournament's partner is Aeroflot.
