FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich Opens World Championship Match Carlsen - Caruana in London

The Opening Ceremony of the World Chess Championship Match between the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen (Norway) and the challenger Fabiano Caruana (USA) took place in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on November 8. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and the CEO and Chairman of the Management Board of PJSC PhosAgro, member of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Chess Federation Andrey A. Guryev attended the ceremony along with other honorable guests. A drawing of lots was held as well: Fabiano Caruana will play the first game with the white pieces. The games will be broadcast on our website. 

According to the Regulations, the rivals will play 12 games with a classical time control 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, 50 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game plus an additional 30 seconds per move starting from move 1.

The colors will be changed after the 6th game (the player who has White in the 1st game, gets Black in the 7th game).  

If the scores are level after the regular twelve (12) games, after a new drawing of colors, four (4) tie-break games shall be played. The games shall be played using the electronic clock starting with 25 minutes for each player with an increment of 10 seconds after each move. If the scores are level after the games in Article 3.7.1a, then, after a new drawing of colors, a match of 2 games shall be played with a time control of 5 minutes plus 3 seconds increment after each move. In case of a level score, another 2-game match will be played to determine a winner. If still there is no winner after 5 such matches (total 10 games), one sudden-death game will be played.The player who wins the drawing of lots may choose the color. The player with the white pieces shall receive 5 minutes, the player with the black pieces shall receive 4 minutes whereupon, after the 60th move, both players shall receive an increment of 3 seconds starting from move 61. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces is declared the winner.

The match days: November 9-10, 12-13, 15-16, 18-19, 21-22, 24, and 26. Free days: 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, and 25 November. If it is necessary, a tie-break will be held on November 28. 

The rounds start at 6 p.m. (Moscow time). 

FIDE invites everyone to participate in a forecast contest where one can predict events in the games and the outcome of the match for the chess crown.
