European Individual Championship Begins in Minsk

The highest rated player is David Navara.

On May 29, the European Individual Chess Championship opens in Minsk. Almost 400 chess players from 38 countries, including 104 Russians, will take part in the event. 

The rating favorites are David Navara (Czech Republic, 2739),  Dmitry Andreikin (Russia, 2723), Dmitry Jakovenko (Russia, 2718), Yuriy Kryvoruchko (Ukraine, 2714), Maxim Matlakov (Russia, 2714), Baadur Jobava (Georgia, 2713), Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukraine, 2712), Peter Leko (Hungary, 2703), Arkadij Naiditsch (Azerbaijan, 2700), and Maxim Rodshtein (Israel, 2698). 

Russia is also represented by Evgeny Tomaskevsky (2696), Vladimir Fedoseev (2690), Vladislav Artemiev (2682), Aleksandr Rakhmanov (2676), Alexander Motylev (2665), Vadim Zvjaginsev (2661), Daniil Dubov (2660), Alexander Riazantsev (2659) and other strong chess players.

The event is an 11-round Swiss. The match days are May 30-June 3 and June 5-10. All rounds except the last one start at 3:30 p.m. MSK, the last round begins at 11 a.m. 

The European Individual Championship 2017 is a qualification event for the next World Cup. According to FIDE regulations and the decision of the ECU Board, 22 players will qualify.
