The Favorites' Clash is Coming

Siberia (Novosibirsk) plays SOCAR (Baku) in the round 5.

The 4th round of the European Club Cup is in the books. Nona (Georgia) increased its margin from rivals, following a convincing 3.5-0.5 win over Ugra (Russia). The leader has 8 points now, surpassing Gambit (Macedonia) by two points. Ugra and ShSM (Russia) are three points behind.

In the men's tournament it is time for the key matches. Thanks to a victory of Yu Yangyi, Alkaloid (Macedonia) defeated Novy Bor (Czech Republic) with a minimal margin, and SOCAR (Azerbaijan) defeated Obiettivo (Italy) due to victories of Veselin Topalov and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who prevailed over Peter Leko and Etienne Bacrot respectively.

Russian strongest club Siberia proved its strength by cruising over Bronze Horseman from St. Petersburg – 4.5-1.5, with Vladimir Kramnik defeated Peter Svidler on the first board.

University from Belorechensk sensationally lost to a mediocre Norwegian team that has only one grandmaster – Evgeny Romanov.

Siberia, SOCAR, and Alkaloid are leading with 8 points each. Tomorrow, on October 23, Siberia will face SOCAR in one of the most anticipated clashes of the tournament. Alkaloid will play Obiettivo, the latter having 6 points so far.
