CFR Becomes Member of Asian Chess Federation

The transition is scheduled on May 1, 2023.

Tuesday, February 28, the Continental Assembly of the Asian Chess Federation took place in Abu Dhabi as part of the Asian Chess Summit, where the question of the Chess Federation of Russia's joining the ACF was on the agenda.

President of the Chess Federation of Russia Andrey Filatov opened the meeting by expressing his gratitude to the President of the Asian Chess Federation, His Excellency Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, organisers and delegates of the Summit, as well as to FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich and the FIDE Council.

Then the delegates listened to the report by GM Mikhail Kobalia, Head coach of the Russian junior team, and watched a presentation and a documentary dedicated to the Chess Federation of Russia's work.

The CFR's joining the ACF was voted for by 29 votes, one delegate voted against, and six delegates abstained on vote. The transition is scheduled on May 1, 2023.

President of the Chess Federation of Russia Andrey Filatov:

– This day witnessed a historic event: a chess federation, one of the strongest in the world, has moved from one continent to another for the first time ever. We are grateful to the delegates for having supported our transition to the ACF at the Continental Assembly by a majority of votes. It goes to show the amount of trust in us on the one hand, and the good work achieved by our federation on the other.

I hope for further fruitful cooperation and participation of Russian teams in the continental championship and for holding of Asian competitions in Russia, which has many times successfully held tournaments at the highest level and has all the associated infrastructure.
