A' Design Award with Chess Accent

The wine-and-chess case by Chateau La Grace Dieu des Prieurs @art_russe_wine will take part in A' Design Award & Competition, the largest design competition in the world. Every year, the Milan-based organizing team announces nominations across more than 100 categories covering virtually all areas of contemporary design, from architecture and graphic design to jewelry and accessories.

The global mega-competition was established in 2009, following extensive research carried out at Politecnico di Milano, the Polytechnic University of Milan. The organizers had studied more than 1,000 international design awards and established A' Design Award & Competition as the largest interdisciplinary competition aiming to identify the best designers across the globe.

Renewed annually, the A' Design Award & Competition judging panel is made up of experienced design experts, academics, journalists, and entrepreneurs. It is the largest and most influential judging panel in the world, with 211 judges from dozens of countries constituting the judging panel ‘International Design Academy’. The key evaluation criteria are design, engineering, and presentation.

The Chateau La Grace Dieu des Prieurs submission is participating in the A' Design Award & Competition in the ‘Packaging Design’ category, one of the Top 12 award categories, with the status of a realized project.

The Chateau team designed the special Art Russe chess gift case in 2014 as a tribute to the ancient intellectual game, bringing together the arts of chess, painting and winemaking.  Complete with a set of chess pieces handmade to an individual design, the elegant wooden box with a chessboard lid contains 6 bottles of famous Saint-Emilion wine with Russian art on the labels. The case is made from top quality natural materials such as wood, valchromat and leather.  The man behind the idea of the case is the owner of Chateau La Grace Dieu des Prieurs, President of the Chess Federation of Russia Andrey Filatov.

The unique wine-and-chess case from Chateau La Grace Dieu des Prieurs became a super-prize in several prestigious FIDE competitions, awarded notably to the 2018 Berlin Candidates Tournament winner Fabiano Caruana, USA, and the 2021 Ekaterinburg Candidates Tournament winner Ian Nepomniachtchi, Russia. In keeping with tradition, the Art Russe chess case will be presented to the participants in the upcoming FIDE World Chess Championship in Dubai: the Norwegian world chess champion Magnus Carlsen and the challenger, Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi. The match will take place on the premises of the International Exhibition EXPO2020 Dubai.

CHATEAU LA GRACE DIEU DES PRIEURS is a winery in the Bordeaux region of France. The Chateau produces a single wine a year. The bottle labels are decorated with reproductions of paintings by Russian artists. Each year a collection of 12 artworks plus one for the magnum (1.5 l) is released courtesy of the Art Russe Foundation. The Foundation provides artworks from its collection under a cooperation agreement with Chateau La Grace Dieu des Prieurs. In 2021, the magnum Cuvée Elena by Chateau La Grace Dieu des Prieurs won the largest international design competition ‘Red Dot Award’ in the category ‘Product Design’, subcategory ‘Beverage Packaging’.

A' DESIGN AWARD & COMPETITION was established in 2009. The competition aims to provide momentum to the design industry, as well as identify innovative brands and creative designers through support and recognition.

A mark of design quality and excellence, A‘ Design is a globally recognized design accolade attracting attention of design-oriented companies and the expert community. Information about the winners is translated into more than 100 languages. The best works are exhibited in Italy.

Members of the A' Design judging panel do not communicate with each other but vote and leave their comments through a specially designed platform. The diversity of experts, geography and opinions ensure the most objective voting outcomes, which are highly valued in the design world. The extensive number of judges evaluating each participant precludes personal influence or prejudice to produce a more independent and balanced evaluation of the design.

The winning works are exhibited in temporary exhibitions at the MOOD Museum of Design in Milan. In 2020, the competition acquired a space near Villa Olmo in Como and set up the Museo del Design, a museum where the winners of the various categories will be exhibited permanently.
