Health and Positive Attitude

The Final of Belaya Ladya in Dagomys in the review of Vladimir Barsky

Given in the new photo gallery below are pictures from two classes by Boris Postovsky and one by Oleg Pervakov, master class by Sergey Janovsky, intellectual games by Andrey Shumakov, and, most importantly, pictures of schoolchildren who came to Dagomys from all over Russia and abroad. Both in "Sirius" and Dagomys Boris Naumovich highlighted health and a positive attitude towards the game as being the most pivotal aspect for a chess player. Despite its seeming simplicity, it is far from easy to conquer your weaker self and break out of your habits. Meanwhile, the 80-year-old coach takes interest in everything and keeps training his mind and body on a daily basis. He never speaks other than standing, and when he is offered to sit down to take a rest, he invariably replies: “I spend too much time at the computer, let me stand and walk about a little!”

Boris Postovsky’s class in Sirius was devoted to the memory of his friends and outstanding coaches Yuri Razuvaev and Mark Dvoretsky. Boris Naumovich is an author and compiler of the book “Chess Academician Yuri Razuvaev”; but for his intense vitality the book would have never seen the light of day with so many famous chess players contributing into it with their memories of Razuvaev. Boris Naumovich donated a book bearing his dedicatory inscription to the schoolchildren of Moldova and reminded them that back in Soviet times their republic used to host many chess events, Belaya Ladya final being one of them on more than one occasion.

Grandmaster Sergey Yanovsky took over to have the most interesting games of the final analyzed in detail. He takes a thorough and unhurried approach to the games so as to allow kids of various chess skills to learn and remember something useful.

The World Champion Oleg Pervakov gave a lecture titled “Chess puzzle and chess game as one”; even though this name is unlikely to evoke a smile with children born to XXI century, the examples taken from real games and fascinating studies sharing same strategic ideas definitely sparked their interest. With Oleg’s chess puzzle contest taking place in a day, I wonder how well the children are going to deal with it.

This said, Andrey Shumakov’s games are always a lot of fun and excitement, so that the youngsters are always looking forward to it. Tricky questions take witty answers, but young intellectuals like it anyway. Andrey would remind from time to time that winners are in for prizes, them being so cool that he even feels sorry to have to part with them. We will soon find out exactly what they are!

Given below is a small album with a few pictures for you to have a look at.
