World Leading Grandmasters Arrive at Gibraltar

A traditional chess festival starts on the Rock.


A traditional Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival opens on January 22. 274 chess players will take part in the Masters tournament (Swiss system, 10 rounds). The top seeds are Levon Aronian (Armenia, 2797), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France, 2793), Hikaru Nakamura (USA,2781), David Navara (Czech Republic, 2749), Pentala Harikrishna (India, 2745) and many others.

Russia is represented by Nikita Vitiugov (2732), Daniil Dubov (2694), Alexander Motylev (2673), Grigoriy Oparin (2607), Mikhail Antipov (2588), Pavel Tregubov (2575), Andrey Esipenko (2571), Sergey Grigoriants (2568), Alexandra Kosteniuk (2561), Kateryna Lagno (2556), Vladimir Epishin (2536), Valentina Gunina (2502), Aleksandra Goryachkina (2493), Jouri Goriatchkin (2310), and Anastasya Paramzina (2225). 

Starting list

Playing schedule: January 23 - February 1. There will be a play-off match for the 1st place in case of a tie on February 1. 

The games start at 5 p.m. (Moscow time), the last round begins at 1 p.m. (Moscow time). 

We recall that the previous three Masters events (2015-2017) were won by Hikaru Nakamura.
