Vasiukov Discusses Filatov's Decision to Coach Russia

The grandmaster says it is an interesting solution.

The decision by Andrey Filatov, President of the Russian Chess Federation (RCF), to become the chief coach of the Russian men’s team starting January 2016 is an interesting and important step for a specialist like him, putting his reputation on the line, said the famous chess grandmaster Evgeny Vasiukov in an interview with R-Sport agency.

The RCF announced Filatov’s appointment on Thursday. Currently, the chief coach of the men’s team is Alexander Motylev.

“Filatov is a responsible person. If he takes it on, we should see some results. It’s an interesting and important solution, putting his reputation at stake. On the other hand, he does have the right education – in his university programme, chess was one of the key subjects. He was actually trained as a coach”’ Vasiukov said over the phone.

“I wish him success. He is a no-nonsense man and, if he tackles this, he’ll do his best to turn the situation around”, he added.
