The organizers of the Grand Chess Tour 2017 series published a press-release, informing that three players were granted wild card entries to the series – Ian Nepomniachtchi, Sergey Karjakin (both Russia), and Vishy Anand (India). The first reserve is Levon Aronian (Armenia). The third Russian participant of the Grand Chess Tour is Vladimir Kramnik, who received this right thanks to his previous year's results and his FIDE rating. Other prequalified players are Wesley So, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura (all – USA), Magnus Carlsen (Norway), and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (France).

The Grand Chess Tour now uses its own rating, which includes classical chess, rapid chess, and blitz results. So far the use of this rating is limited to GCT-related purposes.

Each of the five GCT tournaments will be a 10-player round-robin. The organizers are able to add their nominees to each event.
