Russian Team Is New World Champion!

The final ninth round of the 2019 World Team Championships was played in Astana on March 14. In the open section, the Russian team, which had already secured gold medals, defeated India 2.5-1.5 (Alexander Grischuk won, while Sergey Karjakin, Ian Nepomniachtchi, and Dmitry Andreikin made draws).

Team England beat Sweden 3.5-0.5 to take a clear second place with 13 points. Chinese chess players won the match against Kazakhstan with a minimal score to become bronze medalists with 12 points. 

Other results: Azerbaijan - Egypt 2.5-1.5 and USA - Iran 3-1.

In the women's section, Team China defeated Ukraine 3.5-0.5 and won the Championship with 18 match points scored.

The Russian made a draw with Georgia (the games Khotenashvili - Lagno, Kosteniuk - Arabidze, Javakhishvili - Gunina, Goryachkina - Batsiashvili were drawn). The Russian chess players won silver medals with 14 match points. Team Georgia got 12 points and edged out Ukraine due to superior tie-break. 

Head coach of the Russian national men's team, RCF President Andrey Filatov: "Our women's team "spoiled" us with their victories, but silver is also a worthy reward, and I congratulate our chess players and coaches with this great achievement. The girls were fighting persistently. The two-time Russian champion Aleksandra Goryachkina, who scored 8 points out of 9, showed her great skills and made a big contribution to the team's success".

Other results: USA - Egypt 2.5-1.5, Hungary - India 2-2, and Kazakhstan - Armenia 3-1.
