“Chess and porcelain” museum opens in St. Petersburg

A new “Chess and porcelain” museum was officially opened in St. Petersburg on April 8. Seven large halls on the Aptekarskaya Embankment, 6 hosted the collection of big chess and art enthusiast German Alexandrov. The opening ceremony gathered many ceramists, collectors, and art enthusiasts. Mark Taimanov and Ekaterina Korbut represented chess players of St. Petersburg.

German Alexandrov also presented a gorgeous bilingual (Russian and English) book “Chess and porcelain” filled with excellent photographs. “Why chess? This is a tribute to my passion that lasts many years. When I was a kid. chess was a whole new world for me, full of mysteries and secrets, and providing an attractive opportunity to succeed in an area uniting sport, science, and art. Why porcelain? When you was born and live all your life in Leningrad, you cannot imagine your life without works of Leningrad Porcelain Factory, many of them being true art masterpieces.”

The collection features about 200 chess sets from 20 countries and other porcelain items connected with the theme. 

Chess and porcelain museum will be open for public starting April 14 five days a week (except Sunday and Monday) from 11 am to 6:30 pm. The entrance fee ranges from 50 to 150 roubles. Address: Aptekarskaya Embankment 6, entrance from the Instrumental Street.
