Chelyabinsk Hosts Igor Kurnosov Memorial

The tournament is the Rapid Grand Prix stage.

On September 8, a stage of the Rapid Grand Prix, a tournament dedicated to the memory of a famous grandmaster Igor Kurnosov, was solemnly opened in Chelyabinsk. 

The tournament is being held for the second year in a row. Many well-known players, like Alexander Riazantsev, Pavel Ponkratov, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Sergei Movsesian, are among its participants.  

At the Opening Ceremony, a lot of kind words were said to Igor Kurnosov’s parents, as many participants were his friends and acquaintances.  

The general sponsor and organizer is Maxim Shusharin, the head of the Chelyabinsk Oblast Chess Federation. The event is also supported by the Ministry of Sport of Chelyabinsk Oblast. 

The prize fund is almost half a million roubles. There will be many special prizes as well: for local players, juniors, girls, and seniors (men and women). Alexander Barkov, a close friend of Igor Kurnosov, established a prize for the most beautiful attack. 

The tournament finishes on September 10.
