17th European Senior Chess Championship Finished in Spain

Russian chess players won 7 medals.

On August 20, the 17th European Senior Chess Championship finished in Sabadell, Spain. The championship was played in four cathegories according to the Swiss system with 9 rounds.

The Russian chess players succeeded: they won 7 medals (1 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze). 

The women's 50+ event was won by WGM Galina Strutinskaya (Russia, 7 points), who repeated her last year's success. WGM Elvira Berend (Luxemburg) is second. 3-4 places were shared by Marina Aseeva and WIM Nina Sirotkina (both from Russia). 

GM Karen Movsziszian (Armenia, 7 points) is the European champion in the age category 50+. IM Evgenij Kalegin and GM Gennady Tunik (both from Russia) are half a point behind. Thanks to his superior tie-break, Kalegin won the silver medal.  

Men and women played together in the 65+ tournament. IM Nils-Gustaf Renman (Sweden) won the Championship with 7.5 points. GM Tamaz Giorgadze (Georgia) is second with 7 points. GM Evgeni Vasiukov (Russia) is half a point behind. 

The legendary GM Nona Gaprindashvili (Georgia, 5.5 points) became the women's European champion in the age category 65+. WGM Elena Fatalibekova is second with 4 points, while Irina Kabanova (both from Russia) is fourth with 3 points.
